Considering Cost: Do Dental Implants Save Money?

Dental implants are considered to be the pinnacle of tooth replacements by many dental experts. They’re the only option that includes a support rod surgically implanted into your jawbone. This functions like a root to keep your jaw healthy and your facial structure intact. Because they involve surgery, dental implants tend to cost more than other restorations. It’s not uncommon for patients to choose a less expensive solution like dentures.

Although you may think you’re saving on expenditures by opting for an alternative to dental implants, you might end up spending more in the long run. Keep reading to learn the reasons why!

Reason #1: Prevent Future Problems

Did you know that when teeth go missing your body reabsorbs bone mass from your jaw that’s no longer needed to support them? Dental implants prevent this with the titanium rod that’s put in place. Every time you bite down, it stimulates your jaw to keep it active.

If you opt for dentures, you don’t get this same benefit and the shape of your mouth and face will eventually change as your jaw deteriorates. On top of that, your remaining pearly whites will shift to fill in the spaces left behind. All these changes can put added pressure on your teeth and jaw that cause additional issues. Your teeth are more likely to wear down unevenly and could break, for example. Plus, your bite could become maladjusted which leads to TMJ (temporomandibular joint) problems like a stiff or locked jaw.

The treatments to address these more complex dilemmas can add up quickly. You might end up spending more down the road than you would if you chose dental implants to start with.

Reason #2: Rarely Require Replacement

Although dental implants aren’t quite as durable as your natural teeth, they’re considered to be the most resilient and stable restoration. They have an incredibly high success rate of 95% which means they’re not likely to fail. On top of that, they can last anywhere from 10 to 30 years if cared for properly. That’s much longer than other false teeth. Plus, they’re capped with a dental crown made of enduring porcelain that resists breaking and staining. It’s possible to harm them, but it happens less frequently than with the alternatives. Dentures, for instance, often need to be replaced after 5-10 years. Plus, they’re much more prone to breaking and cracking and require more frequent repairs.

Though you may spend more on dental implants upfront, you could end up saving money in the long run!
