If you’re considering sedation dentistry for an upcoming treatment, you may be wondering what it will feel like. Nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation each have different protocols that result in varied experiences. Before agreeing to move forward, it’s important that you spend some time learning more about the available options. Read on to learn what you can expect when undergoing sedation dentistry and which option will be right for you.

Sedation Dentistry: What Is It?

Sedation dentistry is used to help patients achieve a calmer, more relaxed state when visiting the dentist’s office. Often plagued by dental anxiety, these individuals are often prone to rescheduling or canceling appointments out of fear. It is also normal for professionals to recommend sedation if someone has a sensitive or strong gag reflex, has past dental trauma, or is preparing for multiple procedures during one visit.

There are many types of sedation offered, but the two most common are nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation.

What Sedation Dentistry Feels Like

One of the most important questions patients tend to ask is “What will it feel like?” The answer is dependent upon the type of sedation received. With nitrous oxide, the process is quite simple and leaves no lasting effects.

Considered the mildest form available, the dentist places the mask over the nose and instructs the patient to inhale. Breathing in the nitrous oxide and oxygen mixture, the individual quickly becomes relaxed, at ease, and somewhat sleepy. It’s important to note that while receiving nitrous oxide, the patient is never fully sedated. Instead, they enter into a dream-like state but remain able to communicate with staff.

When finished, the gas is turned off, the mask is removed, and the patient begins to feel completely normal within just minutes.

If a person receives oral conscious sedation, they’re required to have someone take and pick them up from their appointment. Because the prescribed medication must be taken at least one hour before arrival, the effects will begin to take shape not long after being seated in the dentist’s chair.

Slightly stronger than nitrous oxide, the patient will enter into a deeply relaxed state while remaining cognizant enough to respond to the sedation dentist in Jacksonville. Once the procedure is over, the person may feel a bit groggy for the remainder of the day.

Which Sedation Option is Right For You?

The only way to know which sedation option is right for you is to schedule an appointment with your dentist. It is during this visit they will discuss your current medications and medical history to determine if you will experience an allergy or complication. If not, you can expect to receive the appropriate form of sedation before your next visit.

No matter which method is recommended by your dentist, trust that you’ll be free of any pain or worry when visiting the dentist’s office. Instead, you’ll enjoy an experience that allows for easier, more manageable oral healthcare.
