Invisalign with Dental Crowns, Bridges, or Veneers?

If you’ve already invested in your smile with dental crowns, bridges, or veneers, you may wonder whether you can still straighten your teeth with Invisalign. After all, you’ve already had dental work done, so can clear aligners safely move those teeth?

In many cases, having dental restorations doesn’t automatically prevent you from getting Invisalign. However, your treatment plan will depend on the type and location of your restorations, the condition of your teeth, and the movements needed to achieve your desired results.

Invisalign With Dental Crowns

A crown covers the visible portion of a tooth, which can affect how an aligner fits around it. Fortunately, this doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t straighten your teeth.

Your dentist will evaluate the crown and the natural tooth underneath it before creating your treatment plan. Depending on your situation, Invisalign may be able to move a crowned tooth along with your other teeth.

It’s important that any existing crowns are healthy and secure before beginning orthodontic treatment. If a crown is damaged, loose, or otherwise needs attention, that issue may need to be addressed first.

Invisalign With Bridges

Bridges can require a little more consideration. A traditional dental bridge connects multiple teeth and includes a replacement tooth between them. Because the connected teeth don’t move independently in the same way natural teeth do, a bridge can affect how orthodontic treatment is planned.

That doesn’t necessarily mean Invisalign is off the table. Your dentist can evaluate where your bridge is located and determine whether your teeth can be moved safely and predictably around it. In some cases, your treatment plan may need to account for the bridge rather than trying to move the restored area like a group of individual teeth.

Invisalign With Veneers

Veneers are bonded to the front surfaces of teeth to change their shape, color, or appearance. If you have veneers, your dentist will need to consider both the veneers themselves and the natural teeth underneath them before recommending Invisalign.

The aligners need to fit properly and apply controlled pressure to move teeth. Depending on your veneers and the movements you need, orthodontic treatment may still be possible.

Your dentist may also consider whether any cosmetic dental work should be completed before or after Invisalign. Planning the sequence of treatments can help ensure your restorations and final tooth positions work well together.

Your Smile Deserves a Personalized Plan

Existing dental work doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve missed your opportunity to straighten your teeth. Invisalign can be an option for some patients with crowns, bridges, or veneers, but there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer.

During an evaluation, your dentist can examine your restorations, bite, tooth alignment, and overall oral health. From there, they can determine whether Invisalign is appropriate and explain how your existing dental work may affect treatment.

If you’re unhappy with the alignment of your smile but already have restorations, don’t assume you have to choose between keeping your dental work and straightening your teeth. A personalized evaluation can help you understand what’s possible.
