Veneers Sound Like an Excellent Option; Will They Make My Teeth Sensitive?

Many people have unsightly cracks, gaps, stains, or chips in their teeth that can make them shy about showing off their smiles, and cosmetic dentistry can be an excellent way to enhance your grin and improve your confidence. Veneers are popular treatment that can reshape teeth and conceal a wide range of defects in as few as two appointments, but some patients may experience temporary dental sensitivity after receiving them. Here’s a quick look at how this can happen and how you can keep your smile comfortable while you recover.

How Are Veneers Placed?

Veneers are placed through a specialized procedure that usually requires two appointments scheduled several weeks apart. The process begins with the patient having a consultation with their dentist to make sure the treatment can be performed safely, and some may require preliminary treatments such as restorative or periodontal work before they can qualify. Once the patient is cleared for veneers, they will be scheduled for two appointments that will work like this:

  • The first appointment: Your dentist will begin by administering a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort. Then, they will carefully remove a small amount of enamel from the teeth being treated, take detailed measurements of your bite, and place temporary veneers so you can get used to wearing them. The measurements of your teeth will be sent to the trusted dental lab where your final veneers will be crafted.
  • The second appointment: You’ll come back to your dentist’s office about two weeks later. Then, your dentist will remove your temporary veneers, cement your final appliances in place, and make any necessary adjustments. You’ll then be provided with detailed aftercare instructions and sent on your way to enjoy your new smile.

How Can I Avoid Discomfort While Recovering?

You may experience some mild and temporary discomfort such as dental sensitivity while you are getting used to wearing veneers, and this should go away on its own as you adjust to your appliances. A few tips to help you stay comfortable while you acclimate include:

  • Take over-the-counter pain medication.
  • Chew gently while taking special care to avoid using your treated teeth for a few weeks so the cement has time to cure.
  • Avoid foods and beverages that are sweet, acidic, crunchy, sticky, or chewy until you can enjoy them comfortably.
  • Rinse with a solution of salt and warm water to soothe irritation. Make this by mixing a quarter teaspoon of salt into eight ounces of water.

If your discomfort persists after several days or if you notice symptoms of infection like fatigue, fever, chills, or a nasty taste in your mouth, please contact your dentist for help.

Don’t let the possibility of mild and temporary sensitivity dissuade you from receiving veneers. Consulting with your dentist can help you find the best way to achieve the smile of your dreams.
