The dental crown treatment process is just a bit more involved than simply placing a restoration over top of your damage pearly white. In fact, your tooth will have to be prepared to ensure the crown will fit properly and comfortably.
“Okay,” you’re probably wondering, “so what does that look like?”
It depends on whether you’re receiving a traditional crown or a CEREC same-day restoration. But don’t worry – this post will take a closer look at both options so you know what to expect!
Crown Prep for a Traditional Restoration
If you’ve chosen to go the traditional route for your dental crown treatment, your journey will be split into two appointments. This is because after preparing your tooth, your dentist will need to send design information to a dental lab, where it will take about two weeks for the technicians to customize your restoration.
Appointment #1
Your dentist will physically examine your tooth to determine your dental crown needs, and will then take impressions so they can make sure your crown will fit well. You’re not quite done at this point; your dentist will likely need to shave down your tooth or smooth out jagged edges. Otherwise, your crown might feel strange or loose when you bite down.
Since your custom crown won’t be ready for another two weeks, your dentist will actually place a temporary crown over your damaged pearly white. This will keep it well protected while you wait.
Appointment #2
When your custom crown is ready, you’ll return to the office for your second appointment. Your dentist will carefully remove your temporary crown and replace it with your permanent one. After checking to make sure it fits properly and feels comfortable, you’ll be free to go about your day.
Crown Prep for CEREC Restorations
If you’ve chosen to receive your crown on a same-day basis with CEREC technology, the preparation process will be streamlined into just one appointment. Many of the steps are similar to a more traditional treatment, but you won’t have to wait two weeks for your crown to be customized. Instead, your dentist will simply design and fabricate it in-office! In just an hour or two, your tooth will be perfectly protected and ready to support your smile.
Your dentist will do their best to explain the dental crown treatment process during your consultation. However, if you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to voice them. Your treatment is all about you, after all!
